STATES MOVE TO PROTECT RACETRACKS—IT STARTS AT THE LOCAL LEVEL

A growing movement to protect America's racetracks from encroaching development and nuisance complaints is gaining momentum.

Iowa enacted new racetrack protections in 2025 after racetracks across the state worked together to advance the issue. North Carolina followed with legislation providing additional protections for established motorsports facilities.

These efforts highlight an increasingly important issue for grassroots racing: development continues to move closer to racetracks that were often there first.

The U.S. Motorsports Association has always pushed the importance of the racing industry to be proactive—not wait until a track is facing complaints, development pressure or the threat of closure.

USMA has supported these efforts through economic-impact research, including studies of Knoxville Raceway and the IMCA Super Nationals in Iowa, and the Short Track White Paper Study in North Carolina, helping demonstrate the jobs, tourism, business activity and economic value generated by motorsports.

Today, USMA is also working closely with the Motorsports Council of Pennsylvania (MCP) and racetracks around the country to tell our economic importance story, and strengthen motorsports at the state and local level.
