In-Depth Study Confirms Knoxville Raceway as a Key Economic Driver, Generating $74.2 Million in Annual Impact

Knoxville, Iowa (June 5, 2025) -- A newly released independent economic impact study conducted by the United States Motorsports Association (USMA) confirms what locals and race fans have long known—Knoxville Raceway is not just the “Sprint Car Capital of the World,” but a significant economic engine for the State of Iowa.
The comprehensive report highlights Knoxville Raceway’s considerable impact on job creation, tourism, local business growth, and infrastructure development. The study, based on data from over 4,000 race fans and teams, utilized input-output economic modeling to measure the raceway’s impact on the regional and state economy.
“Knoxville Raceway is unique in that people travel here for one reason—racing—but once they arrive, they engage with so much more,” said Shawn Stewart, Managing Director of USMA. “They visit restaurants, golf courses, local shops, and explore area attractions. The money spent by fans and race teams continues to circulate for months, supporting businesses and creating jobs across Iowa long after the checkered flag falls.”
“For over 70 years, Knoxville Raceway has been a proud part of this community,” said Jason Reed, General Manager at Knoxville Raceway. “This study shows that the impact of our track goes beyond entertainment—it drives small business growth, tourism, and job creation across the region. We’re proud to contribute to Iowa’s economic success.”
Key Findings from the Study:
$74.2 million in total annual economic impact generated by Knoxville Raceway
$18.7 million in economic output from the Knoxville Nationals alone, supporting 136 jobs and attracting more than 25,000 fans per day
150,000+ visitors annually, with 56% traveling from outside Iowa, representing 45 U.S. states and multiple countries
622 jobs supported across the region
$21.3 million in employment earnings created
30+ local businesses engaged annually to support raceway operations
In addition to racing, Knoxville Raceway hosts concerts, first responder training, local fundraisers, and other community events, welcoming more than 30,000 non-racing visitors annually. The track also enhances Iowa’s global visibility through streaming, digital media, and international fan engagement.
The Knoxville Nationals, held every August, is one of the most prestigious sprint car events in the world. Competitors and fans travel from as far as Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Europe, placing Knoxville and Iowa on the global stage.
This study confirms that Knoxville Raceway is far more than just a weekend attraction—it is a cornerstone of economic vitality and a catalyst for statewide prosperity.
